But despite the Biden administration’s urging and classified briefings to senators last week on the crucial role they say the spy program plays in protecting national security, a group of progressive and conservative lawmakers had refused to accept the version of the bill the House sent over earlier. Still, officials had said that court approval shouldn’t be a substitute for congressional authorization, especially since communications companies could cease cooperation with the government if the program is allowed to lapse. The House passed a bill to reauthorize and reform a government surveillance tool without including broad restrictions on the FBI’s use to search for Americans’ data. Before the law was set to expire, U.S. officials were already scrambling after two major U.S. communication providers said they would stop complying with orders through the surveillance program, according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations.

Late-night food,

Enjoy a night of dining and dancing under the stars. One of the major changes detractors had proposed centered on restricting the FBI’s access to information about Americans through the program. Though the surveillance tool targets only non-Americans in other countries, it also collects communications of Americans when they are in contact with those targeted foreigners. Sen. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat in the chamber, had been pushing a proposal that would require U.S. officials to get a warrant before accessing American communications.

“This reauthorization of Section 702 gives the United States the authority to continue to collect foreign intelligence information about non-U.S. Persons located outside the United States, while at the same time codifying important reforms the Justice Department has adopted to ensure the protection of Americans’ privacy and civil liberties,” Garland said in a statement Saturday. An adorable old-fashioned complex that's just what you need for a fuss-free, affordable stay, the Key Lime lets you choose your own style. You can stay in one of the rooms gathered around the modest swimming pool for a classic motel-style stay or you can pick a self-contained cottage arranged around the acre of well-maintained grounds. In the back of the property, its original estate home, 1854's Robert Maloney House, is where you'll find hotel-style bedrooms away from the admittedly mellow social scene by the pool. Although it's right off Truman Avenue, the grounds are green and the energy isn't impersonal or frenzied—you're far enough from Duval Street (about a 5-minute walk) to find peace, but near enough to find food and drink without struggling with a car.

The program permits the U.S. government to collect without a warrant the communications of non-Americans located outside the country to gather foreign intelligence. The reauthorization faced a long and bumpy road to final passage Friday after months of clashes between privacy advocates and national security hawks pushed consideration of the legislation to the brink of expiration. Our bar tender was courteous and friendly. The tvs are limited depending on what section is open.

The six amendments ultimately failed to garner the necessary support to be included in the final bill. Gen. Merrick Garland praised the reauthorization and reiterated how “indispensable” the tool is to the Justice Department. The legislation that was approved 60 to 34 with bipartisan support would extend for two years the program known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. It's relaxing but not super high-end—the staff is cheerful and it cares, but it also steps back and lets you do your own thing—making it a good choice if the last thing you want is to be caught up in the city's heavy-handed overpriced luxury hotel scene. What documents do you need for a cruise?

what do you need to go on a cruise

This can cut down on your bar bill or fuel your Diet Coke obsession should your ship carry only Pepsi. For evenings on board, pack a night light or battery-operated candles so you can find your way to the bathroom in the dark. A small, portable sound machine is helpful for blocking out hallway noise if your cabin is in a noisy area of the ship, such as close to the elevator banks. Popular themes include white night, pirate night and Halloween — and, yes, cruisers do go all-out with costumes. Check with your cruise line to see which parties or theme nights will take place, and then pack accordingly. Remember that any destination can be unseasonably warm, cold or wet, so pack a jacket for that Bahamas cruise or a short-sleeved top for an Arctic sailing — just in case.

If adults wish to bring non-related kids onboard and have them stay in a separate cabin with no adult present, the total number of non-family members must be equal to or less than the number of the adults' own children. All passengers and crew are required to be vaccinated on Viking’s river, ocean, and expedition ships—without exception. Viking strongly recommends passengers receive a booster dose before departing. Viking recommends but does not require a predeparture COVID-19 test (except if required by a destination). Vaccine and pretrip testing requirements can be confusing, especially if you are cruising internationally.

The visa cost is $99 and will be charged to the onboard account for all guests onboard the ship who do not already posses a visa for Fiji. The cost of the visa will not be waived for guests who remain onboard in Fiji ports. Passport holders from the below countries will be charged $30 per person for a Cambodian visa upon arrival into Cambodian ports.

If you like to walk about with your morning coffee or tea, you can't get a to-go cup at the buffet unless you're paying extra for a latte or espresso. I also recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and filling it up at the buffet or even a bar. It helps reduce plastic waste, and you don't bust your budget buying bottled water. Although you should always take steps to protect your personal documents and only take them out with you when necessary, you also want to be prepared in case your wallet or passport is stolen or misplaced.

If these have not yet been provided, please ask your Stateroom Steward. Children must meet minimum age requirements for each age group, at the time of sailing to participate in programming. To allow us to expedite immigration clearances in the various countries you will be asked to surrender your passport to our staff upon check-in.

The exception to this rule is that from Nov. 1 through Jan. 7, the minimum age to cruise on your own jumps to 19, and every cabin should have at least one passenger who is 19 or older. In addition, from Jan. 8 to 31, the age minimum goes back to 18, but there's a limit on the number of 18-year-olds who can travel on their own. When the limit is reached, all added passengers under age 19 will need to share a cabin with someone 19 years old or older.

While most purchases on a cruise ship can be made using your onboard account or credit card, it is recommended to carry some cash for small expenses or when visiting ports where credit cards may not be widely accepted. Traveler’s checks are also a secure alternative for carrying money, as they can be replaced if lost or stolen. It’s advisable to inform your bank and credit card companies about your upcoming travel plans to prevent any issues with card usage during the journey.

What to Expect Onboard the White Pass Scenic Railway

We have recommended Alaska Rail Vacations to our friends and they also had an amazing experience. Ride the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad to a historic mountain pass. Whether you crave the warmth of the summer months or the winter-wonderland look of winter, this is your guide to the best times of the year for trips to Alaska. Find Alaska cruises and see the Last Frontier from a comfy train car. The best time to see the Northern Lights while cruising Alaska's waterways is September.

Alaska Cruisetours: A Great Way to See the Great Land

The 4.5-hour train ride departs from just outside Anchorage Airport and arrives at the docks for an easy transfer in Seward port. In fact, the Grandview Train schedule is aligned to the cruise ship schedules which is super useful. The White Pass & Yukon train trip is one of the most popular day excursions available to cruise passengers in Alaska. Almost all cruise lines offer the excursion, but it can also be booked separately should you wish.

You helped make memories for a life time

It gets darker earlier than it does in the summertime, giving you more opportunities to see this natural phenomenon. Kamloops was established by the Shuswap First Nation and served as a trading post before it was incorporated. Whether you visit before or after your Alaskan cruise, Kamloops is a great place to stop on your Canadian rail tour. The small size also allows these vessels to travel to tiny inlets and fjords along the Alaskan coastline that cannot be reached by larger ships. These waters are rich with marine life, including sea lions, orcas and humpback whales — so keep your camera at the ready. Step onto one of Holland America's modern, comfortable vessels and begin your voyage at sea.

See the mighty Mississippi, North Dakota plains, and Glacier National Park as you wend your way along this lovely route. This is the perfect option if you're cruise is departing of finishing in Seward. Many one way cruises go between Vancouver and Seward and flying in or out of Anchorage is usually the best option (and the cheapest). Because this is a long journey, you should expect to pay an extra $1,500 on top of your cruise price minimum.

Go flightseeing by Denali’s snow-covered peak, fly-fish for Arctic grayling, raft the Nenana River or venture into Denali on a park tour. Explore the vast interior and the rugged coast on one amazing trip. Alaska cruisetours combine the iconic Alaska cruise with a voyage into Denali National Park and the Yukon Territory.

These Alaska train tours leave from Anchorage and travel into the Chugach National Forest. An Alaska train tour can be just a few hours long, or last several days on a journey along the Alaska coast or into the wild interior. For cruise passengers, the train journey begins in Banf where you stay the night to explore this lovely area. In the morning you board you train and travel to Kamloops where you stay overnight in a hotel. The following day you journey to Vancouver where your Alaska cruise ship awaits. Alternatively, you can do the trip in reverse and take the train when you disembark your cruise in Vancouver.

Why book your train journey in Canada with Canadian Train Vacations?

After the railroad's completion, the expedition was far less arduous, and it took much less time for stampeders to reach the Klondike region. While you probably won’t have time to shop when your cruise ship docks in Seward, you can pick up both kitsch and practical Alaska souvenirs when you arrive in Denali Park Village. Hourly shuttles are available between the Denali National Park Visitor's Center and the Denali Park Village lodge, where you will be staying. Your Cruisetour, however, includes all of your transportation needs during the land tour. An early morning on the Nenana River can be a peaceful, lazy experience for some, but if you’re looking for action, try out the two hour whitewater ride on intense, high class rapids. This unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime river tour is an adrenaline surge.

With train stations often centrally located within these cosmopolitan cities or remote towns, it is easy to explore the best of Canada by train. Expedition Ships are smaller and more agile vessels, with reduced passenger capacity to allow for larger cabins and a less crowded ship. You'll pass remote communities, such as Telegraph Cove, Skagway and Ketchikan, and sail through Glacier Bay National Park—where enormous chunks of ice make a thunderous roar as they crack, split and crash into the sea. This route is sheltered from the Pacific Ocean winds and waves by large islands, such as Pitt Island and Princess Royal Island. This is a fantastic option for people who want to see as much of the country as possible in one trip. The route takes in the rugged splendor of the American West from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest.

alaska cruise with train ride

In 1988, the route reopened as a tourist attraction and now operates from early May through late September to align with the Alaska cruise season. In 1994, the White Pass and Yukon Route was designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, among the likes of the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty. Even if trains, history and nature aren't your cups of tea on their own, something absurdly special happens when the three combine for an Alaska cruise and train experience. Another option for eats on your Denali cruise the appropriately named Salmon Bake, is just one of the many spots to try local Alaskan salmon and other comfort foods during your time in Alaska. Stop in for live music, where local bands play every night, or fill up on crab cakes and halibut tacos, or simply to experience this fun, quirky location just a mile from Denali National Park.

Nicknamed the Golden Heart City, Fairbanks is a gateway to remote outposts and oil fields, and it still retains its raffish frontier charms. Glide through the Rockies on a sightseeing train with panoramic views. Explore charming mountain towns, unwind in a luxury lodge and tour famous waterfalls or glaciers. Discover Canada's pristine wilderness before embarking on a cruise through Alaska's Inside Passage. It's also the more relaxing option as traffic during the bus journey can get fairly hectic. However, if your heart is set on seeing the Yukon, day tours like the shore excursion you would take from your ship typically don't have enough time to head that far up the Klondike Highway.

Alaska Railroad | Goldstar All our itineraries except the Glacier Discovery Train includes Gold Star Dome Service. These railcars feature large, curved glass windows that run the full length of the car, allowing excellent 360 degree viewing plus a private outdoor viewing deck. GM Announces Ultra Cruise, Enabling True Hands-Free Driving Across 95 Percent of Driving Scenarios

gm ultra cruise

Visit cadillacsupercruise.com, chevysupercruise.com, or gmc.com/connectivity-technology/super-cruise for compatible roads and full details. Automatic Lane Change and Lane Change on Demand are not available while trailering. Dubbed Ultra Cruise, the new system uses sensors like cameras, radars, and lidar to control a vehicle’s steering, acceleration, and braking. GM says the system can be used on 2 million miles of paved roads and in “95 percent” of driving scenarios. Though which vehicles will get Ultra Cruise is still a mystery; GM says it will be available in a handful of premium vehicles in 2023, though the automaker wouldn’t disclose specific models. The Celestiq will kick off GM’s lineup of premium EV offerings that will all come equipped with its new sensor suite and applicable software, but which model will follow the Cadillac remains a secret.

GM’s Safe Deployment of Hands-Free Technology Shapes Ultra Cruise

gm ultra cruise

Prior to that incident, Cruise had been announcing launches in new cities — including Dallas, Houston and Miami — at a startling pace. First introduced in 2017, Super Cruise was GM’s first foray into hands-free driving. The system relies on a detailed map of the highway system, which are the only roads where it can be activated. General Motors is getting rid of the “Ultra Cruise” brand and merging the team that was working on it with the team responsible for Super Cruise, as the automaker reconsiders its goals for advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS).

GM Announces Ultra Cruise, Enabling True Hands-Free Driving Across 95 Percent of Driving Scenarios

GM’s Chief Engineer, Jason Ditman, revealed the company’s strategic approach to ensuring a seamless and secure operation of Ultra Cruise. With a comprehensive array of over 20 sensors, including LiDAR, radars, and cameras, the cutting-edge technology offers unparalleled control and awareness of driving situations, further bolstering drivers’ confidence in the system. Previously, GM outlined several of the sensors that will power the driver-assist system, including cameras, short- and long-range radar, and a lidar sensor. GM has said its vehicles will come with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Ride Platform to process all that sensor data. The destination-to-destination hands-free system will use more than just cameras to “see” the world. These systems work together through “sensor fusion” to provide Ultra Cruise with a confident, 360-degree, three-dimensional representation of the vehicle’s surroundings.

Ultra Cruise will ultimately enable door-to-door hands-free driving on all public paved roads in the U.S. and Canada

With a Level 3 system, a driver could theoretically take their eyes off the road under certain circumstances, like low-speed stop-and-go traffic. A key component of Ultra Cruise is its Human Machine Interface, through which the system presents information to the driver and communicates when they need to be in control of the vehicle. Building on the HMI currently used in Super Cruise, Ultra Cruise’s HMI also shows drivers that they and the system are seeing the same thing. Smart diagnostic and learning systems automatically identify scenarios where Ultra Cruise needs upgrading, triggering data recordings in vehicles equipped with the service.

GM Brings Powerful New Compute Architecture to Ultra Cruise to Help Enable Door-to-Door Hands-Free Driving

The keen focus on safe deployment means we may not see exactly what Ultra Cruise can do for some time. All that said, the Cadillac Celestiq will arrive with all the necessary hardware and software required to operate Ultra Cruise whenever GM feels it is safe. Notably, that’s different from the Level 3 systems that Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Ford currently have under development.

1Ultra Cruise Advanced Driver Assistance Technology functionality is currently in preproduction and subject to change. Capability will evolve over time by way of over-the-air updates once functionality becomes available. 2Safety or driver-assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Read the vehicle Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information.

GM Is Not Cancelling Ultra Cruise, Just Merging It With Super Cruise

In fact, it will launch covering more than 2 million miles of paved roads, including city and subdivision streets, paved rural roads and highways. Super Cruise was first released way back in 2017 on the then-new Cadillac CT6 gasoline-powered luxury sedan. It has long been classified as a "Level 2" type of semi-autonomous technology, a driver assistance aid above purely human operation.

GM is preparing for another major expansion of its hands-free Super Cruise system

Over the past few years, GM has upgraded Super Cruise as it spread to a variety of other gas and electric models, including the Chevrolet Bolt, Cadillac Escalade and Lyriq, GMC Hummer EV and many more. The latest version of Super Cruise includes features like automatic lane-changing, and is widely regarded as one of the better ADAS technologies on the market. GM’s fundamental strategy for all ADAS features, including Ultra Cruise, is safely deploying these technologies. A deep knowledge of what Ultra Cruise is capable of, along with the detailed picture provided by its sensors, will help us understand when Ultra Cruise can be engaged and when to hand control back to the driver. We believe consistent, clear operation can help build drivers’ confidence in Ultra Cruise. "GM is not scaling back its advanced driver assistance (ADAS) programs," GM spokesperson Aimee Ridella told InsideEVs today.

You can power your home for 21 days with a Chevy Silverado EV and GM’s new bidirectional charger

Ultra Cruise is powered by a 5-nanometer, scalable compute architecture future-proofed through the Ultifi software platform and Vehicle Intelligence Platform. Ultra Cruise can add features, functions and services over time through frequent over-the-air updates. GM’s two hands-free advanced driver-assist systems will coexist in the company’s lineup with Super Cruise available on more mainstream vehicles and Ultra Cruise reserved for premium entries. Ultra Cruise builds upon the capabilities of Super Cruise and allows the company to offer Super Cruise on more mainstream vehicles and reserve Ultra Cruise capabilities for premium entries. Due to fact that the driver must remain engaged at all times, GM states the Ultra Cruise ADAS was architected as a Level 2 autonomous driving suite.

The automaker had two different teams working on two different solutions, this source said, and since Ultra Cruise was designed to be just a "more capable" Level 2 system, it made sense internally to combine them. Ultimately, what GM may end up doing is offering higher and better "levels" of Super Cruise as new, more automated vehicles roll out. “We are not walking away from the capability, taking the money and moving to a different program," the source indicated.

And those actions can create a domino effect that has the potential to be dangerous — perhaps even fatal. Now we’re getting more of a glimpse — albeit an extremely limited one — into the types of sensors and hardware that will be included in these Ultra Cruise-equipped vehicles. GM has said that the bespoke ultra-luxury Cadillac Celestiq would be one of the first vehicles to come with Ultra Cruise — but that vehicle isn’t expected to go into production until early 2024.

Ditman told us that component-level testing is underway and all sensors are in the final stages of validation. GM vehicles equipped with Ultra Cruise prototype software are currently being tested at the automaker’s proving grounds in Milford, Michigan, while off-property testing is underway with drivers remaining in control of the steering. GM will be the first company to use the Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon Ride™ Platform for advanced driver assistance technology, which features an industry-leading 5-nanometer Snapdragon™ SA8540P SoC and SA9000P artificial intelligence accelerator. GM’s all-new, advanced driver-assistance technology, Ultra Cruise, will ultimately make hands-free travel across most of the U.S. and Canada possible.

Before we dig into the new details of Ultra Cruise, we should start with GM’s ADAS predecessor, Super Cruise. Super Cruise is a hands-free driver assistance feature introduced years ago that uses adaptive cruise control technology and connected services in each GM branded vehicle to navigate LiDAR-enabled map data using real-time positioning, cameras, and sensors.

Car Shows, Cars & Coffee, and Cruise Nights Near Me

car shows and cruise ins near me

The support from the Central Ohio car community for Wayne, Luella, and the cruise-in was amazing. Looking back at the crowd of people during the raffle drawing gave me goosebumps. The next day the Miller Swap Meet/Car Show at the Ross County Fairgrounds in Chillicothe, Ohio had just 27 cars participate in the car show. The swap meet faired much better since much of it was held indoors. The organizers of the 2nd Friday NAPA Cruise-in made the wise decision to reschedule the cruise-in from Friday evening to Saturday evening.

Central Ohio Car Shows, Cruise-ins, & Meet-ups for April 8 – 14, 2024

In July, the Toy Barn in Dublin, Ohio started hosting weekly meet-ups at the dealership. After that it was Bourbon and Exotics, then Viper Night -- you get the picture. Of all the car shows, cruise-ins, and meet-ups I attended this season, One stands out far above the rest.

I don’t have any details but they apparently just celebrated their 30th anniversary of the gathering. Would love a location, contact info, dates of their season, details. Thanks somebody — please be in touch — contact info at top. Whether you’re looking to go cruising, enjoy a car show or go to a race, we have the full list of events going around in Arizona.

Welcome to Cars And Coffee Events

The organizers said they had registered around 700 kids and I believe it. I went through a 350-piece bag of candy in under an hour. Last year Max Spraque helped organize a car show at SVG Motors in Washington Court House to help raise money for Julie Posey.

With much better weather on Saturday, the cruise-in had an estimated cars in attendance. On the other hand, a cruise-in is a more casual gathering of car enthusiasts. These events typically take place in a parking lot or other open space, where car owners can park their vehicles and show them off to other enthusiasts. There is generally no competitive aspect to a cruise-in. Some cruise-ins are components of larger events.

The big event of the weekend took place on Sunday. Ricart Ford in Groveport, Ohio, Rabid Customs, Jax Wax, and the Marysville Mustang Club hosted the Mustang 60th Anniversary Car Show at the Ricart dealership. Check out the Save the Dates for 2024 page for the most comprehensive and best-organized list of future Central Ohio car events. Does anyone know about a Cars & Coffee Cruise-in Saturday mornings in HERMON from 8am to Noon?

I'm glad the rain stopped and the roads dried as it turned out to be a fun couple of hours in London. The Vineyard Church had 40 award plaques and three "Special" trophies. The "Special" trophies included Kid's Choice, People's Choice, and Pastor's Choice. The Cruiser of the Year award went to Jimmy Carmean and Rick Jones.

The cars that were there had decorated trunks with bowls full of candy to give out. Liberty Township even brought one of its fire trucks to the event. I have to start out this week's News and Notes by announcing the passing of several Central Ohio car community members. The Empty Pockets Cruisers presented 50 award plaques at the end of the show.

The Urbana Cruisers with their auction raised $1650 for Donald Sparks. For those who may not know who Donald Sparks is, you'll find him on YouTube under the channel name Go4Rider. The money raised at Sunday's show will help cover some of the travel costs so Donald can continue making videos of Ohio car events. That Thursday evening 617 cars and close to 1000 people were in attendance.

Julie was a veteran in need of a double lung transplant. Unfortunately, Julie passed away on October 10th. Don Kirk passed away on October 7th at the age of 89.

The car awards included "Favorite 40" along with four "Specialty" car awards and a Best of Show. This is down a little from previous years thanks to the weather and a noon kickoff of the Ohio State vs Penn State football game. A big thanks to Jeff Shankle and Chad Herrick for their help with this week's News and Notes. Pap's gave out awards to the Top 40 cars along with Best Costume and Spookiest Car. The cruise-in had lots of cars decorated for Halloween and plenty of trick-or-treaters.

Our site is all about connecting car enthusiasts to events and shows across the U.S. From finding the next big car show to sharing your own event, we're here to keep the car hobby alive and kicking for everyone to enjoy.. Next Monday will have the schedule for the entire month of November and a News and Notes report from the last weekend of October. We're down to the last three weeks of outdoor car events.

If you're dying for one more car event before you put your car away, here you have it. The Rod Knockers Car Club out of Marion, Ohio still managed to put on the best no-registration fee monthly car show in the area. The club did this despite a change in management at the Rural King which wasn't particularly car show friendly. This is the first time in the twelve-year history of the cruise-in that happened.

The Empty Pockets Cruisers hosted its annual trunk or treat car show on Saturday at the Hilliard, Ohio Presbyterian Church. Last year the event had over 200 cars but this year with the rain attendance was a bit over 80. About 40 cars turned out for the Toy Barn's Trunk or Treat event on Saturday evening. The corporate version of Columbus Cars and Coffee held its final meet of the season Saturday morning at the Midwestern Auto Group (MAG) dealership in Dublin, Ohio.
